Delhi hospitals see spike in dengue cases

New Delhi: Delhi hospitals continue to see a surge in dengue cases as the number of patients from the city and nearby areas, particularly Uttar Pradesh, are rising.

Dr Pooja Khosla, Senior Consultant in Department of Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said that several younger patients are being seen with dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever and many of them are not aware that they had dengue before. It gets revealed when their IgG levels are checked. She added that they are seeing a lot of cases from outside Delhi as well, especially Uttar Pradesh.

According to data released by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), around 1,006 cases of dengue have been reported, besides 154 malaria cases and 73 chikungunya cases, in Delhi. Dr Khosla stated that a surge in dengue cases is usually observed at this time of the year.

She further stated that dengue is a seasonal disease and the cases increase after rains. A fall in cases usually starts after Diwali. 

The first dengue death was reported in the national capital in September.
